The man was crazy. He loved her? Okay, so she knew that, but marriage? Gemma didnât even know if she was a marriage kind of person. Nor could she think of one example of a good marriage that had lasted that she could mine for tips. She wasnât going to ask Terrenceâs parents what their secret was, and who else had been married that long? She didnât want her and Dan to turn into crazy people.
John stood by the front counter. He and Andra were happy, and heâd come through a bad marriage. She knew his first had ended in divorce. Maybe John knew how to do a good job at it.
She glanced back at Dan. If she agreed, would they be setting themselves up to destroy the good that theyâd found together? What if they tore each other apart because they didnât know how to coexist? There was a chance it might be good. Great, even. But how did she know it would be for sure?
The sheriff lifted his chin as they approached. âSam is in a coma.â
In the end, Gemma spent the night in the medical center with Shelby, who insisted she used a spare bed to sleep. When there was no change in Samâs condition in the morning, she walked home. It was just after eight, and a Sunday. No one was out and about.
Gemma stopped abruptly and spun on the street.
No one was there. She was turning herself inside and out in knots. Terrence wasnât waiting in the shadows to accost her again.
Gemma showered as fast as she could and dressed in one of her more demure outfits. These jeans only had a rip in the knee, not up her thighs like some of them. Her boots had heels, and she added some jewelry.
What did people wear to church anyway?
Donât think about it. Donât think about what anyone is going to say, or what theyâll think. This is about you and Dan, not anyone else.
Her people didnât go to church. But if anyone could break the cycle it was her, and Dan. They had to walk free of the past if it was going to lose its grip on them. She wasnât going to pretend to be something she wasnât, but sheâd spent all night thinking about it. Church was a huge part of Danâs life, so why shouldnât she get to know him in that context?
Gemma ignored the surprised look and took the folded paper the person gave her. She stepped inside the Meeting House and saw a lot of the town was there. The volume of talking in the room dropped, but didnât go to dead silence. Because that would have been embarrassing. Still, Gemma felt her cheeks flame, ducked her head, and made for the back row. She stopped at the middle seat and slumped into it.
The sheriffâs son said, âExcuse me.â Gemma shifted her knees and let him pass. The sheriff followed him, and they sat on the end of her row. Andra came along a second later, her pregnant belly protruding in front of her.
